In Gosti we invited Mr. Sunilkumar Suthar founder at Service on Spot, a home and office maintenance service agency in Surat , Gujarat. His service company provides services like carpentry, plumbing, cleaning, masonry, pest control and many other services. Usually it is difficult to find contractors who would be interested in low budget work and even so the turn around times are significantly higher. A maintenance service company is not a new concept but there haven't been many successful examples. Hello Sir , Welcome to Gosti.. Please tell us about yourself? Where are you from? How long have you been in Surat?

My name is Sunil & I am originally from Rajasthan . I am in surat from from past 10 years since 2013.

What all services do you provide through your service company service on spot?

We provide services for maintenance work like electric repairs, carpentry, cleaning, plumbing, civil work for which you will not easily find people. We provide services for both home and office.

How did you get this idea to start a service company? Has your previous work experience been in the same field?

Yes, my previous work experience has been in the same field. I am aware of the difficulties faced by customers for such small work. They are charged heavily, for 1 hour work they need to pay for full day labor so I started this work. We keep our service charge as nominal as possible. There is a lot of scope in this field as well.

How do your customers generally contact you? What's the procedure ? Is there an online slot booking?

I get calls directly from customers, also through Just Dial. There are references from previous customers too. No, there is no online slot booking.

What is your typical turn around time?

It's dependent on the type of work . Sometimes there are emergency calls, we try to accommodate if we can else it takes about a day or two.

How many such service companies like yours are in Surat? Any idea?

There were 6-7 but many of them closed down during lockdown. At present there must be 3-4 operational.

How big is your network? How many calls can you attend for the same service in a day?

Our network is fairly large. For the same service we can respond to 3-4 calls in a day.

You provide services for civil (masonry) work. Generally online service providers don't include it because of low profit margin in small work. How do you compensate? Do you increase the profit margin?

No we try to keep our charges low even for civil work, else we would not get any more work.

When did you start Service on Spot? Any difficulties you faced that you might want to share? Are you planning to expand?

It's been 1&half year since we started. It is going okay. Yes we want to expand but in the city first, currently we are limited in our service areas in the city. No difficulties as such but sometimes customers are unreasonable and require immediate service.

How do you compare to online company Urban Company?

Urban company has a specific list of services that their customers can select from, on the contrary we visit the site , inspect and then provide quotation.
